Group Work – GSL – Talking about death game

  • Our group met to plan the goals of our game
  • We used the questions that Emma gave us to think through the rationale behind the game design (e.g. what the goals for the player, how can they win etc)
  • We used the research that we have been doing on games about death to talk about our ideas of how the game could be made and what it might be able to achieve in the time that we had
  • We collated our ideas in a working document which we will continue to add to
  • We also spent some time playing through the introduction to the game “What Happened to Edith Finch” and talked about what makes the game so successful
    • the use of music to communicate feeling and atmosphere
    • the use of real photos in a digital game world increases the sense that these characters are real people
    • the user interface is varied and interesting and even though the story is linear, the interactions mean that the game remains fun and novel
  • We talked about how we might integrate some of these ideas in our game

Outcome

We made significant progress in planning our game goals

We will meet again next week for another workshop with Emma and then meet again as a group on the 18th of May to continue start working on the specifics of the game
