Book Chapter – Creating the Process: The Game’s Design Path

Reflections:

  • They suggest that no game design is perfect and designers need to be mindful of the limitations of the tools and technologies
  • They also need to be flexible as things will change during the process
  • They suggest that keeping things simple is a good way to work
  • Interesting to read their opinion that games are “notoriously late” (pg. 40) to finish because they involve so many complex and potentially unpredictable tasks.
  • They talk about different design processes and think that my game is probably going to be driven by it’s art and story rather than the technology. The technology will be a limiting factor for me as I am still learning and am unlikely to master it during the semester.

What Next:

  • In this chapter they talk about a kind of design process that involves multiple quick iterations on a prototype and I think this feels like a good way to do things. It also fits with how I like to make art – by constructing the complete draft outline and then ‘working into it’
  • Hopefully I’ll get time to do this with my game and if not, will aim to carry this forward into the next semester
