Game Making – Danger on the Train – Exporting Files and Exploring 2D Games

Aims for today’s work

  • to learn about how to export the game – to check if this is going to work with my final project
  • to make an attempt at a basic shell for a pixelated platform game
  • to rough illustrate some of the scenes to give the game a bit more personality

Achievements

Exporting the game file

  • The Godot tutorial didn’t really tell me how to do this, but I managed to find a guide with the right info. After downloading the export packages and tweaking the settings, I managed to create a dmg file = which worked!

Making a platform game shell

  • I used this tutorial:
  • I also made my own character using an online pixel drawing app:
  • With only some minor glitches I managed to build a world with an interactive character with a camera that moves with the character:
  • Now that I have a better sense of how the world is built and the character motion works – I have a better idea of how I to conceptualise the game and the steps needed to build it
  • This YouTuber continues to build on this tutorial to complete the game: I will come back to the series another day to stop my brain exploding.

Illustrating some of the scenes

  • I have some ideas of how the scenes could look but wanted to see how these might be realised
  • I don’t really like using moodboards, I prefer to work from imagination using whatever references I have to hand or can quickly find
  • I organised the scenes as photoboards in photoshop and started using photos from free Unsplash.com to create images.
  • These are the images from the first three scenes of the game

I’m trying to create a dream like atmosphere and also trying to be careful about not trying to make the character too specific – to allow the player to imagine themselves in the situation.

So far the images are looking good! And it has been easy to add them to the Godot game file

Reflections

+ve-ve=>
– Approaching the game making in chunks with a good quality tutorial was successful
– I’m pleased that I’m able to use my digital art knowledge / skills to develop my story board ideas. I am feeling like this game could actually workout!
– The tutorial didn’t cover a lot of things I need to know, so I will need to continue needing to patch together tutorials to get to where I need to get to
– I think there are aspects of the story which will need tweaking – the storyboard is feeling a bit rigid, but I hope to think about this as the game becomes more formed
– Once I have the new versions of the images done and the first prototypes of the mini games I will do some testing and iterate again
– I am going to continue chunking the game tasks into manageable bits. I am getting a better sense of how much work I can realistically achieve in a day.
– I think I could have done some testing with some rough versions of the game but I have been talking to people about the idea and most people seem excited to try it.
