I almost didn’t make any new music to go with the game but as I was playing the final version, I felt like the story scenes felt dead without music. I wanted to make music that contributed to the sense of danger and also that communicated something of a late night public transport situation.
I started with the idea that the music would be the pulse for the game and to start with melodies and beats that were hard and impersonal. I looked for loops in the ‘electro house’ and ‘techno’ genres.
I then added some melodic components using a midi synth looper and also added a bass rhythm.
I played around with the panning of the tracks and the reverb to help the sounds communicate a sense of shifting space. I added some accent loops to stop the track becoming monotonous.
For the second part of the game, I used the same track but sped it up slightly to communicate the increasing tension.
For the third part, when the train stops, I created a track which was a bit more about feeling tired. Something much less harsh but still a bit uncomfortable.
Overall, I’m pleased with how the sounds work together and feel that working within a short timeframe helped.
