Read – Art- Chapter from How to Do Things with Videogames

Reflections

  • I have been thinking about whether games can be classified as art and this is one take on the argument
  • It leans heavily on the idea that art is a contested definition and that the last century did a lot to breakdown the idea of art as being a monolith of practice or principals
  • I guess this is a reference to postmodernism…
  • So the summary of the argument is that games can be considered to be part of the landscape of art but unlikely to be considered as part of the fine art world
  • It encourages the thought that this is ok and necessary given the differences between games and fine art
  • I am happy to include games in the sphere of art as they incorporate design, images, sound, but maybe closer to something like performance art or art as defined within time-based media
  • It sounds like that’s all the thought I should give this topic!
