Reading – Vox Article – ChatGPT or Grok? Gemini or Claude?: Which AIs do which tasks best?

Reflections:

  • This article was presented to me by an algorithm in my browser feed
  • The writer tests out various AI platforms and critiques their art and writing output
  • Interestingly, when talking about the artwork they say:
    • “I’m not an artist, so the ways that AIs are imperfect at art don’t really bother me — it’s still much better than I could do myself! But I am a fiction writer, so when it comes to fiction, I can’t help seeing the limitations of AI.”
  • I wonder if this is also how a lot of other non-artists feel. When I look at the work the AI is created I’m struck by how they look like strange simulacrum of the original people, but that may just be my bias because I know they have been produced by AI.
  • When talking about the writing she says:
    • “The prose is florid and overwritten: While Martin uses normal language to methodically introduce an unease without even hinting at the supernatural, and drives the story through conflict among his characters, the AIs are all unsubtle. They know this is a story about the supernatural and waste no time putting it front and center.”
  • Although they are very invested in AI reporting, they still feel that humans (at this point) are better for writing
  • If I believe the hype about the improvements that the models will make then perhaps in a few years the above flaws will no longer be an issue. Or that we will have acculturated to the way that AI works and not be so bothered about spending large amounts of time generating prompts and revisions.
  • It reflects my experience of how the class this week went – AI is useful but still glitchy, needing a lot of time and I would prefer to start from basics and solve these problems myself. In saying that, it has been most helpful when I have been super specific about coding problems that need a small discrete solution or when I need to understand what is going on with the code. This has been very useful for me.
  • As with all AI conversations – time will tell if it’s going to put us all out of a job.
