Visited – Exhibition – Tavares Strachan – There is Light Somewhere

This exhibition ended in September but I wanted to include it in my learning journey because this is the first time that I am processing the photos from the visit.

It is the most skillful collection of work that I have seen in a retrospective and every piece was stunning. There was just the right amount of innovation mixed with exquiste craft work.

Although it was obviously very ‘technical’ in the sense that the making and displaying processes use a lot of technology, it felt very human – it avoided becoming plastic or eutopic / dystopic. I wonder if this is because the artist seemed to ground his work in human stories and sense of heritage.

I took so much inspiration from the show and at many points was moved by what had been shown.

I want to try and take something from the aesthetic and emotive qualities of his work into my own inter-disciplinary practice.

One thing I wondered was – who are the people that help him make these works? There is no way that one person can do all of this. I wonder why the artist didn’t make them more seen in the works…

All photos by me.
