Interesting points from the talk
- Talk is about looking to the past internet to think about ideas for the future
- The internet is now curated by companies that are trying to catch our attention rather than help us develop / learn etc
- In the past – ways people might have found about websites:
- RSS feeders
- Idea of ‘link love’ where someone posts links that they love which
- blog rolls (where you curate links about people that you like / follow)
- Slashdot is a website reference to look up
- Talked about the dangers of creating all of your content on someone else’s platform: which they may restrict or remove in the future
- Suggests that people should have their own mailing list and blog system
- Mentioned the term ‘enshitification’ which was discussed in semester 1.
- First end users are subsidised, then they subsidise businesses and then stop subsidising both and then make lots of money. Everyone is held hostage and overtime people leave and the platform ends.
- With my personal practice I should try and start a newsletter and blog via my website – this might help me be more resilient in the long term
- It’s important to be critical about ‘services’ that many platforms provide as they will have a business model where the user is not the most important person and they can suddenly change the way the platform works
- There are lots of benefits from these platforms (infrastructure, trust etc)
- Interesting that Tim opened Instagram on a browser in developer mode and in 1min Instagram had sent 300mb of data
- The video has been useful for me when thinking about future planning for my art / creative career
