{"id":840,"date":"2025-03-19T16:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T16:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsa-creativetechnologies.uk\/kb4n24\/?p=840"},"modified":"2025-05-13T21:46:46","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T21:46:46","slug":"creative-practice-danger-on-the-train-learning-about-godot-scenes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsa-creativetechnologies.uk\/kb4n24\/creative-practice-danger-on-the-train-learning-about-godot-scenes\/","title":{"rendered":"Game Making &#8211; Danger on the Train &#8211; Learning about Godot Scenes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Aim for this learning session <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>When I approach complex tasks I like to break them down <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For this project, I want to start the game by laying out the major scenes and then starting to flesh them out section by section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I think I want to lay out the mini-games as <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To assess how my progress has gone, I want to use a technique I&#8217;ve read in the book &#8216;tiny experiments&#8217; (Le Cunff, 2025) =&gt; drawing a table with 3 columns +ve \/ -ve and what next. Le Cunff encourages people to think about personal development in non-linear ways &#8211; as small experiments &#8211; and this focusing on small steps will hopefully help me learn about my process as well as my skill gaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will also help me iterate my process as my skills develop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What did I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>I started with the Godot manual on their site, looking at the 2D functionality <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I read their intro to scripting languages: <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.godotengine.org\/en\/stable\/getting_started\/step_by_step\/scripting_languages.html#doc-scripting\">https:\/\/docs.godotengine.org\/en\/stable\/getting_started\/step_by_step\/scripting_languages.html#doc-scripting<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I watched this video on scenes: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=biYBttEW8Io\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=biYBttEW8Io<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buttons: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OgjGnlU43Fs\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OgjGnlU43Fs<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I found that in general, even videos where the steps seemed simple, were difficult to follow <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The final video on buttons gave me the information that I was needing and I haven&#8217;t (yet) needed to do anything more complicated <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have been able to integrate my rough storyboard images into Godot (as scene textures) and now each scene is clickable to the next scene<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The outcome<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Each scene leads to the next with mouse clicks and I have learnt how to add dialogue text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">ADD GIF OR VIMEO VIDEO  <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Reflecting on this making session <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While I was making things, I was thinking carefully about what was working \/ not working and what was making feel stressed \/ productive. I have summarised these reflections below with learning that I am taking forward for the next making session. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>+ve<\/td><td>-ve<\/td><td>=&gt; <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Eventually I found the right piece of information for what I needed to do <\/td><td>Quickly feeling overwhelmed with the complexity of the information <\/td><td>Continue taking a problems based approach to learning how to use the software &#8211; trying to learn everything in an abstract way is likely to overwhelm <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>I integrated my storyboard with the scenes and now it feels like I have a solid structure for the game to work into <\/td><td>Feeling like I am probably doing things the hard way <\/td><td>Chunking the tasks into smaller bits and leaving enough time for problems is the way to go <\/td><\/tr><tr><td><\/td><td><\/td><td>Taking breaks when feeling overwhelmed was helpful too<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><\/td><td><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><\/td><td><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><\/td><td><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>References <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Anne-Laure Le Cunff (2025). <em>Tiny Experiments<\/em>.
