{"id":873,"date":"2025-03-20T14:42:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T14:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsa-creativetechnologies.uk\/kb4n24\/?p=873"},"modified":"2025-05-13T21:45:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T21:45:14","slug":"read-empathy-in-how-to-do-things-with-videogames","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsa-creativetechnologies.uk\/kb4n24\/read-empathy-in-how-to-do-things-with-videogames\/","title":{"rendered":"Read &#8211; Empathy &#8211; in How to Do Things with Videogames"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Reflections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>The chapter writes about the complications to trying to create empathy in games <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He discusses the idea of the vignette as a way to create a sense of empathy and how little vignettes are used in games <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He writes &#8220;one reason might be the relative scarcity of small-form representations of human or natural experiences in the medium&#8221; (pg. 22)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> He also writes that &#8220;critics might argue that frail situations are not fun&#8221; (pg. 23) and I wonder if this might be where my game might get stuck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I need to think carefully about whether empathy generation is one of the aims of the game and if it is, then are there other strategies other than the vignette?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If I see the game as an exercise in culture jamming (<a href=\"https:\/\/wsa-creativetechnologies.uk\/kb4n24\/reading-book-culture-jamming-marilyn-delaure\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wsa-creativetechnologies.uk\/kb4n24\/reading-book-culture-jamming-marilyn-delaure\/\">learning log entry<\/a>) then I might have more strategies to employ, including humour.
